Diamonds are an investment. Just like a car, a house, or your teeth, proper maintenance will ensure the value is maintained and minimizing potential damage. Here are a few tips…the down and dirty on diamond cleaning and proper care that don’t take much time at all:
DO VISIT YOUR JEWELER ANNUALLY.
It is important that the prongs of diamond mounts are checked regularly. If these are damaged or loose, diamonds may fall out. Jewelers will also clean and polish with special equipment for a detailed cleaning. While time does seem to get away from us, make a mental note when your anniversary rolls around to get that diamond checked.
DO STORE DIAMOND JEWELRY SEPARATELY.
Diamond jewelry can be scratched and can also damage other pieces. Exposed edges can chip or crack if not handled properly. Safe keeping in a fabric-lined jewelry box, individual compartment, lint free, white cloth, or even a zip-loc bag is ideal.
DO MONTHLY DIY DIAMOND CLEANING.
Diamond cleaning each month with commercial jewelry cleaner or even a homemade solution of mild dishwashing soap and hot water is good practice. After soaking the diamond jewelry piece for a few minutes, use a soft brush (toothbrush, lipstick or eyebrow brush) to clean around and under setting.
DON’T TAKE RING FROM HOT WATER TO COLD WATER IMMEDIATELY.
When cleaning your diamond jewelry, allow a 15 second window when switching from hot to cold water.
DON’T USE CHLORINE-BASED SOLUTIONS.
Chlorine can tarnish the diamond setting. Avoid contact as much as possible, even in chlorinated hot tubs and pools.
DON’T TOUCH THE DIAMONDS WITH YOUR FINGERS.
Take care to handle diamond jewelry pieces on the edges. Hands contain dirt and oils not necessarily visible to the naked eye. Avoid further build-up of grime on your diamond.
Over time dust, dirt, and oils can get built up on your diamond. This will lessen its dazzle. Take the time to ensure the life of your diamond jewelry. Perhaps it will one day be an heirloom, a point of pride in the family.
